1-For those who do not know, can you introduce yourself?
My name is Cody Deaner. I am a small town boy who grew up in a small rural community in Southern Ontario. I grew up being obsessed with wrestling and used that obsession and passion to drive myself into the wrestling business.
I’ve wrestled in front of millions of people on WWE and TNA television, and currently travel across North America wrestling independently. I just started working with Global Force Wrestling, so I will be travelling all over the world with GFW hopefully in the near future.
2-Can you talk about your first steps into this buisness? How did you get into wrestling?
I had no idea how to break into the business. I was lucky enough to speak to one of my favourite local independent wrestlers at the time, Dangerboy Derek Wylde, in 1999 and learned of a wrestling school he was opening up. I started training in 2000 in Niagara Falls with Wylde and some other awesome guys. It was physically the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but I loved every minute of it.
3-Do you remember your first match?
Yup. It was a battle royal. As the new green kid in the match I got my ass handed to me and ended up getting eliminated about 7 times. (I kept sneaking back in for more punishment)
4- When did you know you wanted to be a wrestler? How did your family react to you becoming a wrestler?
I knew at the age of 5 that I wanted to be just like Hulk Hogan when I grew up. I was a Hulkamaniac through and through.
My family was very supportive. I think they were skeptical about it, realizing that my dream was a long shot, but they have supported me every step of the way. Especially my brothers who were die hard wrestling fans like me growing up.
5-Who inspired you for your wrestling style and your character?
Tonnes of guys. Rowdy Roddy Piper, Jake the Snake Roberts, Hulk Hogan, Michael Hayes and The Fabulous Freebirds, Terry Funk, Shawn Michaels, the list goes on and on.
6-Who had the greatest influence/impact on your career?
That’s too hard to narrow down. There are many guys for a variety of reasons. Guys like Derek Wylde – who trained me and helped get me my break initially in the business. Showtime Eric Young – who also helped train me and has been a huge supporter of mine and helped me get my foot in the door with TNA. Or Jeff Jarrett – who gave me my initial shot with TNA and now with Global Force Wrestling. Those are just a few other the many guys who have had significant impacts on my career up until this point.
7-What has been the hardest sacrifice being part of the wrestling world?
Missing my family. You’re away from your family a lot. I’m no different. I have two young kids and daddy has to leave to wrestle a lot. It’s hard. It’s a sacrifice. But ultimately, I want my kids to learn from my sacrifice. I want them to grow up with me as an example and realize that your dreams are possible if you work really really hard. That being said, I make sure I’m there for my kids. If I have to say no to something for the sake of my kids … I definitely will. Family always comes first.
8-If you could change anything about the wrestling industry, what would it be?
I’d “de-monopolize” it. WWE is the real only major player in the market. Wrestling needs more promotions for the boys to work for. And not just work for … but make a real good living with. If we could go back to a very healthy territorial system (of sorts) I think it would be best for everyone – the wrestlers and the fans.
9-You’re most known for your run with TNA in 2009 where you spend a lot of time working with ODB, almost 7 years after, what do you think about this run?
I look back on that run with good memories. ODB was awesome to work with. The boys I was working with were great. TNA was a fun place to work when I was there.
10-In 2004 you faced Kurt Angle in a match for his gold medal. How did you feel when you were in front of him on the ring?
Honestly, I felt like I belonged. I never thought I’d make it there. And I never thought I deserved to be there … until I was there. Once I walked down to that ring and stepped through the ropes, I felt at peace. I knew I belonged there.
11- Would you like to return in one of these companies or would you rather stay in the indies where there is a lot of possibilties?
My goal is to make as much money as possible doing what I love – which is wrestling. Wherever I can go and make the most money, yet still spend time with my family, is the best place for me right now.
12-If I’m right you’re still undefeated with Kevin Nash, would you like to work again with him to extend your winning streak? Which teams would you like to face?
We’re definitely still undefeated! Kevin Nash is one of the coolest, funniest, and nicest guys I’ve met in wrestling. Working with him is always awesome. We’re ready and willing to take on anyone! Cuz “Big Sexy” and “Little Sexy” will always be undefeated! Book it promoters! Book it!
13-What are your best memories in wrestling?
Just being with the boys. Travelling with my friends. And that feeling you get in front of a large and vocal crowd. There’s no drug like it in the world. When you stand across the ring from a friend, and you both soak in that crowd reaction … nothing beats that. Nothing.
14-How do you see your future in wrestling ?
Onward and upward. Bigger and better.
I made more money in 2015 than any year previous in wrestling. In 2016, I’m on track to make even more. I will continue to bust my butt locally and it will lead to larger opportunites and more money.
I am really looking forward to working with some new independent wrestling companies this year and with Global Force Wrestling worldwide.
